Thank you Easter Bunny
I love to decorate for different holidays. I think it fun for the entire family to make the house festive. In the past, I have gone all out for Halloween and Christmas, but Easter, not so much! Our other homes have had a more traditional feel with richer colors, so the pastel, cooler tones just haven't blended well with the décor. However, our new home with the neutrality that comes with modern farmhouse design has allowed Easter décor to come alive in our house.
Last year, we were still unpacking at Easter, so I found our Easter decoration box and did the best I could to get a little Easter fun into the house. It was minimal, but we had eggs and bunnies scattered about. This year is a different story! Now that furniture is placed and wall decorations are hung, I couldn't wait to bring out the Easter spirit in the new house.
My first step was getting out my old Easter stuff! I love the fun of opening up boxes of holiday decorations. I forget from year to year what I have, so it is always a new adventure. My old box of Easter goodies was filled with sparkly eggs. I LOVE sparkly eggs. Most of them came from CVS and Dollar General when they were marked 75% off. I love to load up then, which has left me with a plethora of pastel, glittery, sequincy (totally made that word up), and very girly eggs.
My Grant and I have had a tradition of displaying some of these fun eggs on an egg tree I purchased for him many years ago. Now that he is 12, I figured this was going to be totally uncool, but he still wanted to do it! My heart sang as he trotted down the steps, picked up the shoebox that holds the eggs and began decorating his tree. He wasn't nearly as excited as other years, and it didn't take him long to complete the task, but he did it. I have a feeling this might be the last year he is willing to do it, but this momma was so happy he obliged.
My Easter box pretty much consisted of the eggs, a few bunnies and a couple of Easter wreaths, so unpacking it didn't take long. I quickly figured out that I needed to buy a few things, but I didn't want to break the bank trying to get the house Easter-ready. I wanted to use things I already had as much as possible, so I grabbed hurricanes, apothecaries and a terrarium I already had. These filled with my already existing eggs and bunnies created cute vignettes that came together quickly.
A month ago, my mom sent me a picture of a cute wreath at Pier 1. I loved the wreath, but thought it was a bit pricey, so I decided to make my own version. I took a wreath that I had purchased recently to hang around the house, added some wide burlap and an unfinished craft bunny, and I had an adorable Pier 1-inspired wreath.
I took a trip to Michael's with my Mom and Dad and 40% of coupons in hand and bought a few new pieces that I really loved. The three of us went through the line, each using our coupons and feeling a little rebellious. I am pretty sure my dad wasn't sure what he had gotten himself into.
I picked up some more eggs at the dollar store along with a cute metal bunny. I purchased a couple of cute plates and a pillow at TJ Maxx, and I ordered some pretty, artificial flowers from Amazon. That was it! I was done. Then, I spent several hours, playing around with my new and old pieces to get things exactly the way I wanted them. I used candle holders, plate stands, books, vases, trays and more to emphasize the look I was going for.
When it was all done, I loved it but I was still missing something. I stood back, looked everything over, and realized I needed texture. I am not a fan of Easter grass, but I needed to add an extra layer, preferably something more neutral. I grabbed the paper shredder out of my husband's office and some paper lunch bags with cartoon characters on them that my boys had long outgrown, and I started shredding away. Soon I had a full bag of shredded paper bags, my version of Easter grass.
I added this grass to several of my pieces, and my look was complete.
Well...I though it was complete until I found another cute pillow at Kirklands that I just had to have the other day, and it was 20% off, and I had a spin to win coupon, so really I had no choice to buy it!!!... and now my look is truly complete!
This year I will be hosting my large family for the first time in our new house, and I couldn't be more excited! There will be lots of fun that day, and the house will be ready thanks to a few DIY projects, a few coupons, and a mixture of old and new.
